Prep Hoops Roundup: Morgan, Layton Christian girls win playoff openers

HEBER CITY — Ten Trojans scored as Region 13 co-champion Morgan defeated four-seed Delta (10-11) 52-39 on Friday morning in a 3A girls first-round game held at Wasatch High School.

Marcie Stapley totaled eight points, 14 rebounds, four assists and four steals to lead Morgan (13-10). Morgan Cragun led the Trojans in scoring with 10 points. Morgan outscored Delta 18-4 in the second quarter to take control.

Morgan advances to play Region 15 champion Richfield (20-2) in the quarterfinals. Richfield won its first-round game 72-22. That game is set to tip at 9:10 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, at Dixie State University.

LAYTON CHRISTIAN 47, WATERFORD 37

ST. GEORGE — Layton Christian took an 18-16 lead into the break, then outscored Waterford (10-9) 16-11 in the third quarter to take control to win its 2A first-round game played at Desert Hills High School.

Danyale Thomas scored a game-high 29 points with five 3-pointers to lead Layton Christian (11-13). Jada Wyms added 11 points.

The Eagles will face Millard at 4:10 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield.

MILLARD 61, ST. JOSEPH 23

ST. GEORGE — St. Joseph scored the first basket of the game, then Millard (12-8) finished the first quarter on a 19-2 run to take control in the 2A first round at Desert Hills.

Gracie Fergus led St. Joseph with nine points. Virginia Tomon added six points and seven rebounds. The Jayhawks season ends with a record of 6-14 overall and 3-7 in Region 16 play.

BOYS BASKETBALL

NORTHRIDGE 89, CLEARFIELD 53

LAYTON — Northridge led 41-24 at the half and cruised to the big region win.

Jovonte Wyllie scored a game-high 18 to lead Northridge (10-11, 6-5 Region 1). Jake Hotchkiss added 15 while Alec Duffin and Lawrence Yarbrough each had 10 points.

Devon Poll scored 10 points for Clearfield (4-16, 0-11).

DAVIS 56, WEBER 50

KAYSVILLE — Davis shot 51.2 percent to beat Weber 56-50 and set up a three-way tie for fourth place heading into Wednesday’s regular-season finale.

Tyson Garff led the Darts (15-7, 6-5 Region 1) with 14 points and had seven rebounds. Josh Sanders scored 13 and Brendon Redford added 11 for Davis, which led 26-15 at halftime and 42-30 after three quarters.

Hudson Schenck led the Wariors (12-8, 6-5 Region 1) with 21 points with a 9-of-12 mark at the free-throw line.

BOX ELDER 53, ROY 50

ROY — Roy led 43-33 after three quarters but Box Elder outscored the Royals 20-7 in the pivotal fourth for the region win.

Tyson Madson led all scorers with 22 points for Box Elder (11-8, 6-1 Region 5) and Parker Buchanan added 10. With the win, the Bees clinch at least a share of the Region 5 crown.

Alex Lamb led Roy (5-16, 2-6) with 17 points and Alex Holley scored 14 with three 3-pointers.

TOOELE 71, BONNEVILLE 65

WASHINGTON TERRACE — Bonneville led 52-44 going into the fourth quarter but Tooele (11-8, 9-3 Region 11) outscored the Lakers 27-13 in the final frame for the region road win.

Kinnon Finder led Bonneville (5-13, 5-7 4th) with 25 points on two 3-pointers and five rebounds. Tyler Hancock added 18 points and hauled in a team-high nine rebounds.

Bonneville now moves to the 4A state tournament as a four-seed. The Lakers will play a first-round game at the Region 10 champion, either Orem or Salem Hills, on Saturday, Feb. 24.

BOUNTIFUL 53, WOODS CROSS 43

BOUNTIFUL — Woods Cross took a 28-25 lead into the halftime break but Bountiful used a 12-7 third quarter to take the lead.

Isaac Kime scored 14 points for Bountiful (10-11, 4-3 Region 5) and Brig Willard had 13.

Tyler Cowley led Woods Cross (6-16, 1-6) with 14 points and Dax Gorringe added 11.

BEAR RIVER 52, LOGAN 50

GARLAND — Logan (13-9, 7-3 Region 12) led Bear River 27-23 at the half, but a 18-12 third quarter gave the Bears the lead for good and Logan missed a 3-point attempt at the final buzzer.

Ren Fonnesbeck scored 15 points to lead Bear River (16-6, 6-4). Parker Coombs netted 13 and Jake Dahle had 12.

The Bears ended region play tied for 3rd with Green Canyon. A coin flip will determine final region seedings. Bear River will travel to St. George on Saturday, Feb. 24, to face either Dixie or Desert Hills.

PARK CITY 60, BEN LOMOND 50

PARK CITY — Ben Lomond dropped its final game of the season to Park City (6-15, 3-9 Region 11).

Sudan Puk led Ben Lomond (2-19, 1-11) with 16 points and Titus Hughes had nine.

STANSBURY 47, OGDEN 43

OGDEN — Ogden led Stansbury (11-11, 9-3 Region 11) 28-19 at the half but the Stallions outscored the Tigers 28-15 in the second half.

Cooper Jones led Ogden with 13 points and Carson White added 10. The Tigers finish the season 5-17 overall and 3-9 in region play.
