Prep Hoops Roundup: Layton Christian boys advance to 2A semis

RICHFIELD — Layton Christian boys basketball took a 49-31 lead into the fourth quarter and held off a spirited Enterprise comeback bid for a 64-52 win in the 2A quarterfinals Thursday at Sevier Valley Center.

One-seed Layton Christian (18-8) sent three-seed Enterprise (13-10) to the consolation bracket.

Micah Petty led LCA with 12 points, all coming from beyond the arc. Braxton Meah added 11 and Lino Saez scored 10.

LCA will face Beaver at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the semifinals. The Beavers defeated Altamont 58-34 in their quarterfinal contest.


ST. GEORGE — Morgan overcame 24 percent shooting in the first half to take a 36-32 lead late in the third quarter, but three-seed Manti outscored the Trojans 31-20 over the final 8:49 for the victory in the 3A quarterfinals played at Dixie State University.

Matt Nelson scored a game-high 24 points for Manti (17-7), including 10 of 11 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.

Cade Russell led one-seed Morgan (20-3) with 23 points on four 3-pointers, five assists and five steals. Laine Carter added 19 points and four rebounds. Stetson Anderson hauled in seven rebounds.

The Trojans will face Grand County at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the consolation bracket.



ST. GEORGE — Morgan trailed one-seed Richfield 12-3 going into the second quarter and fell to the Wildcats (21-2) in the 3A quarterfinals at Dixie State University.

Marcie Stapley led two-seed Morgan (13-11) with eight points and four rebounds. The Trojans shot just 29 percent for the game.

Morgan will face Judge Memorial at 11:10 a.m. Friday in the consolation bracket. Judge fell to one-seed Juab 45-30 in their quarterfinal game.


RICHFIELD — Layton Christian fell behind two-seed Millard 16-2 after one quarter, and Millard (14-7) coasted to the 2A quarterfinal win at the Sevier Valley Center.

Jada Wyms and Danyale Thomas each scored 14 for three-seed Layton Christian (11-14).

LCA will face one-seed Wasatch Academy in the consolation bracket at 9:30 a.m. Friday. The Tigers lost their quarterfinal game against the Kanab Cowboys.
